WOH Ilya Mourymettz "Beh" 1/33 Scale -
Designed
by Igor Sikorsky, the type 22first flew in January of 1914. Christened
Ilya Mourymets after a Russian Folk hero, Sikorsky's monster could carry
1500KG of bombs to a height of 3000m at a speed of 87mph for five hours.
It was the world's largest airplane. With a wingspan of over a hundred
feet, the S22 was only 21 inches short of the B17 Flying Fortress! Heavily
armed with machine guns and rifles and even cannon, none of these bombers were
lost to enemy fighter action. They served until 1923 when the remaining
machines wooden airframes became uneconomical to repair and were scrapped.
The aircraft was highly adaptable, and was flown with wheels,
floats and skis. Several engine configurations were also tried out.
