| Developed from the Nieuport 11 bébé,
the Nieuport 17 was a sturdier aircraft. Initially, the armament
remained a single Lewis machine gun mounted on the top wing. Later
models carried the heavier but harder hitting Vickers, with interrupter
gear. All subsequent "V" strut Nieuport scouts were developed from the
Nieuport 17. |

Nieuport 17 (Charles
Nungesser)
The French Nieuport 17
from was developed from the Nieuport 11 bebe. It was the mount of many
WW I Allied aces from France, Italy and Russia. It was fast and had
superb maneuverability. It was faster by 10 mph than any contemporary
British aircraft and was armed with a single synchronized front gun. It
was replaced by the SPAD VII from late 1916. |
